Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of maternal behaviors, parenting stresses, and marital conflict on children¡¯s aggression.

Methods: The researchers distributed various structured scales to the mothers and teachers of 3-5 year-old children in Seoul, Gyeongki, and Incheon. Mothers completed a parenting behaviors scale, a parenting stresses scale, and a marital conflict scale; teachers completed a children¡¯s aggression scale. The researchers noted frequencies and percentages, and they used t-test, ANOVA, Duncan¡¯s test, and multiple linear regression to analyze the data.

Results: Boys were found to have higher levels of aggression than the girls; however, levels of aggression regardless of gender differed significantly in relation to the degree of rejecting/restricting and permissive/noninterfering behaviors reported by the children¡¯s mothers. The children¡¯s aggression also varied relative to mothers¡¯ parenting stress, which in turn was affected by their child¡¯s temperament. Finally, the aggression was correlated with the degree of marital conflict between the parents.

Conclusions: Maternal behaviors, parenting stresses, and marital conflict were found to influence children¡¯s aggression.
