We conducted the first nationwide survey of medical residents in South Korea. This research analyzed the survey to assess the prevalence of three different workplace violence (i.e. physical violence, verbal assault, and sexual harassment) during the preceding 12 months and its perpetrators (i.e. patient or patron, faculty members, senior residents/fellow, resident in same training year). And this study also aimed to examine the association between workplace violence and depressive symptoms among 838 male and 357 female medical residents in 25 specialities. Depressive symptoms during the past one week were assessed by using 10 questions from the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale questionnaire. The prevalence of physical violence, sexual harassment, verbal assault in the preceding 12 months was 13.4%, 2.0%, 45.0% among male residents, whereas 7.0%, 14.3%, 42.3% among female residents, respectively. The most common perpetrator was patient or patron across all three types of workplace violence. In the gender-stratified analysis, experience of physical violence was associated with depressive symptoms among male residents (PR: 1.30, 95% CI: 1.03-1.65), whereas experience of sexual harassment (PR: 1.75, 95% CI: 1.28-2.40), and verbal assault (PR: 1.73, 95% CI: 1.28-2.35) were associated with depressive symptoms among female residents after adjusting for potential confounders including working hours, medical specialty, training year, and hospital size.
This study found that medical residents are frequently exposed to workplace violence and that their experience of workplace violence is associated with depressive symptoms in South Korea.
