Abstract

It is suggested that the cause of rectal prolapse is a intussusception of the rectum.
Hence, various methods of fixation of the sacrum either by suspension by resecting the bowel itself have been proposed.
Abdominal proctopexy and sigmoid resection is a composite surgical procedure designed to eliminate all the abnormal factors that contribute to the formation of rectal prolapse.
We have experienced 11 cases of rectal prolapse by this method Kyungpook University Hospital, Taegu Military Hospital, and Taegu Medical Center during two year period between September, 1984 and August, 1986.

The results were as follows:
1) Of these 11 cases, 8 were males and 3 females, ranging in age from 20 to 58 years (mean, 31 years.)
2) Rectal prolapse has been presented since childhood in 6 cases. Of the remaining 5 cases whose rectal prolapse has been presented since adult, 3 were mentally defective.
3) The size of prolapsed segment was 3¡10 cm. There was 1 case of mild incontinence preoperatively.
4) 10 cases were treated by proctopexy and resection, and 1 case of chronic constipation by proctopexy and left colectomy.
5) They were followed for 2¡20 months with no evidence of recurrence.
