Purpose : The characteristic transrectal ultrasonographic findings are not established in
the chronic prostatitis(CP). To evaluate the sonographic changes that occur in patients
with chronic prostatitis and compare them with those of non-inflammatory prostatodynia
using transrectal ultrasonography.
Materials and Methods : In a retrospective study, transrectal ultrasonography were
analysed in 389 men with chronic prostatitis and 371 patients with prostatodynia, all of
whom had undergone a standardized diagnostic procedure to detect inflammation. And
prostatodynia were divided into 175 patients with a history of previous prostatitis(PdP)
and 196 patients without it(PdN).
Results : The ultrasound features of patients with prostatism were prostatic
calcification, hyperechoic area, mixed echoic area, intraprostatic cyst, periprostatic vessels
engorgement, and prostatic capsular irregularity, Two of ultrasound features -
hyperechoic area at peripheral zone (71.0% of cases) and periprostatic vessels
engorgement(31.7% of cases)-showed a significant increase in chronic prostatitis(p<0.05).
Conculsions : The hyperechoic area at the peripheral zone and periprostatic vessels
engorgement are regarded as the characteristic findings of chronic prostatitis(Korean J
Urol 1998; 39: 530¡6)
