Abstract

Thermography reveals the skin temperature changes in various condition of body. The skin temperature is varied according to subcutaneous blood flow under the control of autonomic nervous system. In radiculopathy discogenic pain causses the change
in
sympathetic function of the nerve root and changes skin temperature along the nerve root. Digital infrared thermographic imaging system has beed used for diagnosis of radiculopathy without hazard or discomfort and can measure the temperature
change
due
to discogenic pain objectively.
Authors analyzed pre-and postoperative thermographic imagings in 931 cases of lumbar disc herniation and the types of thermographic imaging and thermatomes of each compressed nerve root were analyzed. Thermography showed high sensitivity in
diagnosis of
disc herniation and showed high validity in evaluation of postoperative course. Thermography is useful for diagnosis and follow up of postoperative clinical course.
