Abstract

Despite of the high response rates induced by combination chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the primary small cell lung carcinoma(SCLC) in thoracic cavity could not be eradicated, completely.
The combination chemotherapy and radiotherapy sometimes produces complete remission in approximately 50% of patients with small cell lung carcinoma localized in one hemithorax(limited disease), but the great majority were experienced relapse of
the
tumor in the same thorax. Be able to eradicate occult metastases, and cannot sterilize large primary tumor deposits.
So surgical excision of the primary focus of SCLC will be tried to be eradicated the recurrence of tumor after chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
We performed right pneumonectomy after three cycles chemotherapy and one cycle radiotherapy for complete remission of SCLC in the Department of the Thoracic and Cardiovascular surgery, Yonsei University College of medicine.
The post-operative pathologic report happened to reveal total necrosis of small cell lung carcinoma suggesting the complete remission of SCLC.
The post-operative courses were uneventful for 15 months to now.
