Abstract

To determine the relationship of the levels of serum retinoids, carotenoids, and a-tocopherol to the risk of cancer among Korean, using high performance liquid chromatography, we measured the serum levels of retinol, ¥â-carotene, and a-tocopherol
of 92
cancer patients and 53 controls.
@ES The results obtained are summarized as follows:
@EN 1) The cancer patient's serum level of ¥â-carotene was significantly lower than normal person's(p<0.001), while retinol level was not related to cancer.
2) Serum ¥â-carotene level was negatively related to the lung cancer(p<0.01) and stomach cancer(p<0.005). All the other sites of cancer shows lower level of serum ¥â-carotene than those of controls.
3) The only association between low level of serum a-tocopherol and risk of cancer was exhibited in the stomach cancer(p<0.01).
4) The cancer patients' serum levels of all -trans-retinoic acid and 13-cis-retinoic acid were lower than those of controls.(Supported by the Korea Science & Engineering Foundation and Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University
