Abstract

Artemisia iwayomogi(Compositae) is a herb drug which has been a choleretic drug in korea. Previously, we reported the antimutagenic activity of several kinds of crude drugs including Artemisia iwayomogi in the Ames mutagenicity test. In the
present
paper, the antimutagenic effect of methanol extract, its fraction and component against aflatoxin(AFB1) in the salmonella assay system was studied. The methanol extract of Artemisia iwayomogi markedly inhibited the mutagenicity induced by 76%,
79%
and
78%, respectively, The active component, scopoletin, was isolated from the chloroform fractions which has the antimutagenic effect. The scopoletin also inhibited the lipid peroxidation in vitro and vivo and showed an antioxidant effect.
Therefore,
the
antioxidant activity can be considered for a mechanism of antimutagenic action of scopoletin.
