Abstract

A retrospective analysis of 175 consecutive total thyroidectomies performed at Yonsei University Hospital was conducted. Complications were observed in 71 patients. The permanent complications, such as recurrent laryngeal nerve injury and
permanent
hypoparathyriodism, were in 6(3.4%). Analysing the factor affecting the complication, extents of resection and disease status were proved to be significant. We think that this low permanent complication rate deserves to be accounted for and total
thyroidectomy is a relatively safe operation when meticulous and skillful dissections are performed.
