Abstract

Medulloblastoma(MB) and primitive neuroectodermal tumor(PNET) are the most common posterior fossa tumors in childhood. Despite surgery and radiation therapy, 40~50% of children with MB & PNET have recurred. Between 1986 and 1992, 35 patients with
newly
diagnosed MB or PNET were treated postoperatively with CCG 921 '8-drugs-in-a-day' protocol at the authors' institution. Among them, 19 patients had taken the pre-RT chemotherapy, and the remained 16 patients only the post-RT chemotherapy. The
overall 5
year survival rate was 61%. The 5 year SR for the patients treated with pre-RT chemotherapy and without pre-RT chemotherapy were 54%, 69% respectively. Its difference was not significant(P=0.32). It is probably due to short follow-up time and
small
number of the patients. Further investigation of the efficacy of chemotherapeutic drugs as adjuvant chemotherapy in newly diagnosed MB & PNET is necessary.
