Polysomnography, the established procedure for the diagnosis of obstructive sleep
apnea(OSA), is expensive and requires an overnight stay at an established sleep
laboratory. A screening test using a portable recorder for sleep apnea at home would be
a relatively convenient means for evaluating sleep apnea patients. The portable recorder
measures heart rate, chest impedance, nasal airflow, blood oxygen saturation, body
position, and snoring level simultaneously. From October, 1994 through November, 1995,
fifty-eight patients referred with snoring and sleep apnea were examined using a
portable multichannel sleep apnea recorder-Eden Trace ¥± (The pattern of
sleep apnea was OSA in all cases). The total number of tests was 51. The test results
were divided into flour groups by the respiratory disturbance index(RDI): Group ¥° (RDI
¡Â 10), Group ¥± (10 < RDI ¡Â 20), Group ¥²(20 < RDI ¡Â 40), and Group ¥³(RDI >
40). The lowest arterial oxygen saturation(LoSaO2), and RDI were also
obtained. From these data LoSaO2 was 90.1¡¾4.7%, 85.3¡¾7.0%, 76.0¡¾0.3%,
73.6¡¾12.9% for Group ¥°, Group ¥±, Group ¥², and Group ¥³, respectively. RDI was 5.4
¡¾3.0(Group ¥°), 15.5¡¾2.7(Group ¥±), 28.6¡¾5.2(Group ¥²), and 52.5¡¾12.3(Group ¥³). The
results of this study suggest that a portable device can be used as one of screening
methods of sleep apnea.
