The aim of this study was to Investigate the relationship between severity of
obstructive sleep apnea and oropharyngeal measurements in obstructive sleep apnea and
snoring patients. Eleven patients with complaints of snoring and sleep apnea were
evaluated by polysomnography and oropharyngeal measurement. The width of uvula, the
length of uvula, the height of soft palatal arch, and the distances between anterior
pillars and between the posterior pillars were measured using a T-shaped scale. The
distances between the retromolar trigones and between the highest points of the soft
palatal arch were also measured. Linear correlation of these anatomical indices and
respiratory disturbance index was analyzed. Of these variables, height of the soft palatal
arch and oropharyngeal inlet area had a significant correlation with respiratory
disturbance index. The results of this study suggest that several oropharyngeal
measurements may be considered in sell cling the ideal candidates for
uvulopalatopharyngoplasty.
