Neuroendocrine tumors comprise a diverse group of neoplasms that include small cell
lung cancers, islet cell tumors, carcinoid tumors, and others. The electron microscopic
and immunohistochemical study are necessary for its diagnosis because of rarity and
difficulty of definite histologic typing. Neuroendocrine tumors can develope in any site of
the body. However, this type tumor is rare in the head and neck.
Neuroendocrine carcinoma of the nasal cavity is extremely rare. The total number of
neuroendocrine carcinoma of the nose and paranasal sinus reported in the world
literature was only about 35 cases until 1983. However, there is no report about
neuroendocrine carcinoma of nose and paranasal sinus in Korea.
Recently, we experienced a case of neuroendocnne carcinoma of the left nasal cavity
in 41 year-old female patient. She presented persistent nasal obstruction for 6 months.
We managed her by medial max illectomy under lateral rhinotomy approach. So, we
first report a case of neuroendocrine carcinoma of the nasal cavity in Korea with review
of literatures.
