Abstract

Recently, there were several epidemiological studies demonstrating that increased physical activity is associated with a reduced risk of colorectal acancer. Thus a case-control study has been conducted to investigate the association between colorectaI cancer and self-reported physical activity during leisure and work-time risk The cases were consecutively diagnosed, histologically confirmed, incident patients with cancers of the colon and rectum aged 30¡70 which were admitted to three tertiary hospitals in Seoul. Korea between March l995 and December l996. Controls were selected in the same hospitals as the cases during the same periods. Finally, a total of 235 cases (93 colon and l42 rectal cancer patients) and l28 controls were selected and inter-viewed on their habitual physical activity prior to admission using a structured questionnaire. Job activity, total leisure time physical activity (LTPA), or heavy LTPA above 6.0 METs in its intensity had no association with colorectal cancer risk. When analyzed by age at study entry (<55 years, ¡Ã55 years), heavy LTPA reduced colon cancer risk (OR=0.3l, 95% CI 0.1¡0.9) among older subjects, and the effects were more pronounced in males. The negative association between heavy LTPA and rectal cancer risk was also observed only in males (OR=0.4l, 95% CI 0.2¡0.9). As shown in the present study, leisure time physical activity, particularly heavy LTPA, was related to a substantially lower risk for colorectal cancer in Koreans.
