Objectives : This study was to identify the relationship between cognitive and swallowing function and ability to perform activity of daily living (ADL) in acute ischemic stroke patients. Methods : The study was conducted for twelve weeks from February to April 2014. Forty-nine subjects with stroke participated and were evaluated by Mini-Mental Status Examination-Korean Version((MMSE-K), American Speech-Language-Hearing Association National Outcomes Measurements System(ASHA NOMS) and Korean-Version of Modified Barthel Index(K-MBI). By SPSS statistics (ver. 21.0) Pearson`s Correlation Coefficient was asked between cognitive function or swallowing and ability to perform ADL in ischemic stroke patients. Results : The results indicated that there was a significant correlation between the cognitive function and the items of ADL such as bathing, feeding, bladder control, walking & W/C and chair/bed transfer. In addition, the swallowing function was significantly positive correlated to grooming, bathing, feeding, toileting, bladder control, bowel control, walking & W/C and chair/bed transfer. Conclusion : Cognitive and swallowing functions seemed to be the most important ones of ADL domains for functional recovery of acute ischemic stroke patients.
