Management of the pharyngeal phase dysphagia mainly consists of two kinds of approaches. One is the application of a variety of maneuvers so as to intensify swallowing-related muscles, and the other is postural control of the neck and the head. Despite their common use in clinics and multiple studies having been conducted with regards to the effects of various swallowing maneuvers and postural techniques on swallowing physiology, the effect of these tasks on the hyolaryngeal musculature has not been clearly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the activation level of suprahyoid muscles using surface electromyography (sEMG) while performing various compensatory swallowing strategies. Suprahyoid muscle activity during compensatory swallowing strategies were recorded in 27 adult volunteers (18 women). Surface wireless EMG electrodes were placed on the skin on both sides of the midline under the chin with an electrode distance of 1cm to record the activity of suprahyoid muscles while the participants performed the tasks. Each activity was recorded three times. Repeated-measures ANOVA was used to analyze the data. The maximum sEMG value of chin up was significantly higher than for control swallowing (p < 0.008). This finding suggest the possibility that certain compensatory swallowing strategies could impose a greater burden on the dysphagic patients¡¯ hyolaryngeal musculature during swallowing. This overloading could cause fatigue if the tasks are sustained for a longer time. Future studies are needed to verify this supposition.
