Abstract

Purpose : To compare the visual performance according to multifocal contact lens prescription methods for presbyopia.

Methods : Nineteen patients with presbyopia(3 males, 16 females, mean age: 45.47¡¾5.88 years) who successfully worn CNMF (center-near multifocal contact lens) were participated. Patients worn multifocal contact lenses of CNMF, CDMF (center-distance multifocal contact lens) and MMV (modified monovision) respectively. Distance and near visual acuity were measured with ETDRS chart. Stereo-acuity was measured with Stereo Fly Test. Subjective visual performance was assessed with modified NEI-VFQ-25.

Results : Distance, near visual acuity, and stereo acuity were not different with all the three prescriptions. However, distance vision satisfaction such as looking at the signs was higher with wearing CNMF and CDMF than MMV, and driving satisfaction at night was the highest with CDMF among them (p<0.050). Intermediate vision satisfactions such as using computer and walking stairs at night were higher with CDMF and MMV than CNMF (p<0.050). Near vision satisfactions such as reading newspaper and receipt were highest with MMV among them (p<0.050).

Conclusion : There was no difference in visual acuity according to three presbyopia contact lens correction methods, whereas the visual satisfactions in daily life differs depending on the working distance and environment. Therefore, choosing a prescription method taking this into account would be increased the satisfaction of wearing multifocal contact lenses.
