Abstract

Smoke-free policy in indoor public places has been implemented to reduce secondhand smoke exposure in many countries. We performed a systematic review to assess the effects of indoor smoking ban on the public health. Using a prespecified search strategy, we identified 4 relevant studies (1 review article from Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare, and 3 original articles) from South Korea, and 11 (3 reviews and 8 original articles) from other countries. A review article from South Korea included the published reports and articles until 2012 and 3 original articles after Jan 2013 were considered in our study. Among studies from other countries, a recent Cochran review included articles until Feb 2015. Therefore, we identified 8 additional original articles since a recent Cochran review published in 2016. According to South Korean studies, indoor smoking legislation has improved the quality of air and reduced irritants induced by passive smoking. Studies from other countries collectively suggest that the frequency of acute coronary syndrome has been reduced after administering indoor smoking ban. In addition, admission due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was reported to be decreased. Improved mortality also has been associated with the legislation. Meanwhile, the effects of prohibiting indoor smoking on the perinatal disease have been inconsistent. In conclusion, indoor smoking ban legislation has improved health outcomes, especially in cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases.
