Abstract

Background: Cigarette tax increase is one of most important policies to reduce adolescentsmoking. There is little evidence that cigarette tax influences smoking behavior of adolescence in Korea. The aim of this study is to investigate behavior changes of adolescence tax increase in 2015.

Methods: Using Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey data in the 9th (2013)¡12nd (2016), we assessed adolescent smoking rate each year. Smokers were asked to have any change of their smoking behavior after 2015 tax increase in 11st survey. Socioeconomic or smoking related factors were evaluated to be associated with smoking cessation or decreased amount using logistic regression analysis. Or decreased smoking using logistic regression analysis.

Results: The adolescent smoking rates were 9.7% in 2013, 9.2% in 2014, 7.8% in 2015 and 6.3% in 2016. The proportion of smoker declines steeply in 2015 and 2016. Adolescent smokers reported that 30.1% quit smoking or decreased smoking after 2015 cigarette tax increase. Having chance of smoking cessation or decreased smoking amount in adolescent smoker was lower in women (OR 0.689; 95% CI, 0.575-0.826) and in group with weekly allowance over 100,000 won (OR 0.687; 95% CI, 0.545-0.866). Anti-smoking advertisement exposed group (OR 1.433; 95% CI, 1.226-1.675) and intermittent smokers (OR 1.627; 95% CI, 1.409-1.879) had quit smoking or reduce smoking amount.

Conclusion: Tax increase is one of tobacco control poly influencing adolescent smoking. In this study, anti-smoking advertisement reveal to influence behavior change in adolescent with tax policy. Many strategy in tobacco control policy is necessary to reduce adolescent smoking.
