Abstract
Background: Little is known about intermittent smokers in South Korea. Aim of this study is to compare characteristics of intermittent smokers with daily smokers using a representative sample of South Korean adults.
Methods: This analysis compares intermittent smokers with daily smokers regarding socio-demographic variables, smoking-related variables, and alcohol drinking with adults ≥20 years old from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2014. Chi-square test and multiple logistic regression analysis were used to investigate differences between daily smokers and intermittent smokers.
Results: Out of 5604 adults, intermittent smokers and daily smokers were 2.5% and 21.2%, respectively. Multiple logistic regression analysis adjusting for age, gender, marital status, household income, education, cessation plan, quit attempts, and high risk drinking showed that intermittent smokers tended to be female (odds ratio [OR]:2.76, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.42-5.34, P=0.003), smokers who educated ＞12 years (OR:5.05, CI 1.56-16.26, P=0.007), and who have concrete cessation plan (OR:9.60, CI 4.94-18.65, P＜0.001) compared to daily smokers. There was no difference between intermittent smokers and daily smokers regarding high risk drinking.
Conclusion: Compared with daily smokers, intermittent smokers showed different sociodemographic and smoking related behaviors. We need to consider this difference when we make tobacco control policy.
