Abstract

Background: Since 2015, the national health insurance supporting policy for smoking cessation treatment is implemented, in Korea. We investigated the abstinence rate of smoking and the factors associated with smoking cessation in inpatient smoking cessation program.

Methods: The study subjects were 228 participants who admitted to smoking cessation program of a local medical center in Daegu, Korea, between October, 2015 and September, 2016. Participants completed a questionnaire, which is composed of smoking habits, sociodemographic factors, and others. The success of smoking cessation is evaluated by urine cotinine test.

Results: In 6 months after discharge from the program, the abstinence rate of participants is 66.2%. The success group is older (P=0.021), has lower body mass index (P=0.022), lower respiratory CO concentration (P=0.038) and attempted more to quit smoking in previous 1 year (P=0.026) than the failure group. In the multivariate analysis, the abstinence rate at 6 months is associated with previous quit attempt (OR 1.925, [95% CI, 1.003-3.695]) and obesity (OR 0.524, [95% CI, 0.294-0.932]).

Conclusion: The inpatient smoking cessation program has higher abstinence rate of than typical methods. The previous attempt to quit smoking and obesity is important factors to success smoking cessation.
